As a Certified Orthoptist, Micaela is trained and specialized in the treatment of amblyopia, strabismus, double vision, and nonsurgical management of strabismus. Micaela graduated from The University of Iowa in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering. She went on to complete her Orthoptic fellowship at The University of Iowa-Department of Ophthalmology.
Certified as an Ophthalmic Surgical Assistant (OSA) she enjoys following her patients from the beginning to the end of their treatment journeys. Orthoptists collaborate and work directly with Pediatric Ophthalmologists to provide the most specialized care. She is extensively trained in research-proven vision therapy, training patients, and parents to do therapy at their pace in their homes.
Micaela has publications in multiple ophthalmology journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the Journal of AAPOS, and JAMA Ophthalmology. She continues to conduct research through PEDIG (Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group). PEDIG is a multi-center collaborative network focused on the management of pediatric eye diseases.
Micaela is an active participant in the American Association of Certified Orthoptists and maintains certification through participation at annual conferences with the American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and The University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.
